SoftSHOT™ Technology, a process whereby judicious design of the overflows can be used to decelerate the shot
system on a die casting machine without the excessive metal pressure that is normal in today’s practice. An
overflow set with specially sized cross sectional gate areas and specially sized overflow pocket volumes can be
positioned in the die where the final filling occurs, and this overflow set will absorb the kinetic energy of the shot
system. Ultimate pressure in the cavity area can, therefore, be controlled to a level that the clamp end of the
machine can hold closed, thereby eliminating flash from magnesium die castings.
